Flare Systems and Burn Pits

A gas flare, also called flare stack, is a combustion device to burn gas released in flare networks in industrial plants such as refineries, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants, and oil and gas production units, oil or gas wells in onshore and offshore.

Flares are categorized according to the type of design and according to several points of view, including:

  1. By the height of installation (ground, elevated)
  2. Depending on the number and type of burners (Pipe Type, Multi-Burner)
  3. Depending on the use of steam, compressed air and the like (process or utility flares)
  4. By type of mixing and disinfecting fluid (steam induction, air induction)
  5. According to the type of stack restraint (self-supported , Guy wired retainer, structure supported)

The flare system can also include various components such as flare tip, flare stack, pilot and combustion control panel, sealing drum, knockout drum, and smoke control and flame monitoring systems.

To combustion of oily or excess liquid hydrocarbons that cannot be processed and treated, a combustion system is used that called  burn pit.  In this system, fuel is collected in a pit and combustion is carried out by the pilot system.

The burn pit system includes the pit, combustion control panel, pilot and burner system, and interface tubes.
